The U.S. presidential elections bring out the largest voter turnout every four years, but midterm elections can have just as big an impact on the direction the country takes. When midterm elections arrive on November 3, 2026, young adults around the nation have the opportunity to help shape the next two years, but recent changes to voting laws may hamper participation. We want to hear your opinions in our 2026 Essay Contest.
In the United States, midterm elections happen every four years, about halfway between presidential races. Voters choose all 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and about one-third of the U.S. Senate, along with many governors and other state officials.
These contests decide who controls Congress, which in turn affects whether a president can pass key legislation, confirm judges, etc. or must negotiate with an opposition majority. Thus, midterms are often read as a verdict on the sitting president’s performance, setting the political tone for the next two years.
The 2026 midterm elections will take place during Republican President Donald Trump’s non-consecutive second term. All 435 House seats and 35 of 100 Senate seats, plus 39 governorships and many other statewide offices, are scheduled to be on the ballot.
Republicans currently hold a slim House majority and a 53–47 edge in the Senate after gains in 2024, so relatively small shifts in voter sentiment could flip control of one or both chambers. Both parties are fighting hard over redistricting and down-ballot races that could shape the balance of power in Washington for the rest of the term.
Using your first-hand experience as a student during a midterm election year, reflect on how midterm elections and equal voting rights affect you, your campus and your community. In your essay, discuss the topic, “Equal Voting Rights During Midterm Elections,” addressing one or more of the questions below:
